Art/PE

there probably wont be anything for PE so this is pretty much all my art class

2018/2019

2017/2018

this project was assigned one day when Mrs. Blair didn't come in. we a list of art related vocabulary terms that we had to create a slide deck for and provide two pictures to go with the definition. it was a good way to try to remember the different phrases and not confuse any of them. for a slide deck assignment, i liked it enough.

The next three assignments we did were S.P.O.N.G.E activity write ups. essentially, during each of these assignment we would look at a picture and try to guess the artist along with a few other questions about the painting itself. After that we would find out who the artist was and take notes while the teacher presented a slide on the artist's life and the specific painting she showed us. Then, we would have to summarize the artist's life and the painting in an essay. it was interesting to find out about the artist since most of them lead less than normal lives.

Salvador Dali
Sponge # 1

Salvador Dali, a painter who specialized in surrealism, was born in Spain in 1904 and died 84 years later
during the year 1989 from a case of pneumonia. He was named after his older brother who had died
shortly before he was born as his parents believed he was a reincarnation of their deceased son.
Because of this, Salvador was confused as a child and became very needy. During his career as a
painter, among other things such as a writer, a clothing designer and the producer of short films, he
would do strange things to get attention from the public. On one occasion, hie dressed in a deep diving
suit during a lecture he was giving at one of his galleries. He also once filled his limousine with cauliflower
on the way to an event. Despite his oddities, however, he was an excellent painter and even worked with
Walt Disney at one point.
The painting we studied in class was named ‘Persistence of memory’. Dali based most of his works off
dreams he had. One of the most prominent things he contributed to the art world was the way he painted.
He used thin watery paint and small brushes to make his pictures smooth and seem almost like a
photograph. ‘Persistence of Memory’  featured a beach and desert scene. There were two tables, one
almost out of view and the other with a tree branch growing out of it. There was also an unidentified sea
creature. However, the most prominent feature of the painting was the melting clocks that were strewn
across the tree branch, the sea creature, and the table, one of which was covered in ants. Additionally,
Dali was very fond of the colors blue and yellow. In the art piece he used bright colors in the sky, and
dark colors in the ground, a recurring scheme in his art.

PERIOD #3
Pablo Picasso
Sponge #2

Pablo Picasso was born in 1881 in Spain and died in 1973. Because his dad was an  art
teacher, Pablo was introduced to art at a very young age. He started painting picture that
were already sell-able by age six, and by the time he was in his early teens, he painted at
an almost professional level. One thing Pablo Picasso was most famous for was the variety
of art styles he painted in. his early works were mainly realistic while he eventually settled
into the abstract art style that he is most famous for. He produced different types of
painting through the periods of his life. First was the blue period, a time he was immensely
depressed because one of his closest friends had passed away. Next cam the rose period,
during this time he decided his painting should be happier and he only painted in shades of
pink, reflecting the time he fell in love. However, his greatest contribution to the art
world was the invention of cubism, an entire art style. In addition to creating paintings.
Pablo Picasso also made dishes, print drawings, costumes and sculptures.
The title of the particular painting we studied was ‘Guernica’. It depicted an attack on a
small town during the Spanish civil war. Men, women, children and animals were all killed.
The subject matter of the painting included the fire, animals, people and buildings.
The coloration of the painting was unique, black and white with areas the mimicked
newspaper text. The piece conveys emotions like  fear, pain and death. The piece itself
was huge, measuring 12 feet high and 25 feet long. Another feature of the painting was
that almost every figure in the painting was facing the same way, to the left.

Vincent Van Gogh
Sponge # 3

Vincent van Gogh was an impressionist artist born in 1853 in Holland who died in France at the
age of 37. Before Vincent decided on his career as a painter he tried many different types of jobs
some of these being a gallery worker, a teacher, a bookstore worker and a preacher, like his
father. When Vincent found his calling and began painting, he moved to a very poor town that
primarily farmed potatoes. During this time, the work that he produced was often dark and
depressing, with brown and blacks being the most prominent colors in his paintings. Because
of this, many of his paintings did not sell which forced him into a depressive state that would
continue to affect him through the remainder of his life. Eventually, he discovered through
influence by japanese artists, that paintings that he used bright colors in would sell more easily.
He moved in with an abstract painter, Paul Gauguin and continued to paint. Still, his paintings
wouldn't sell. Eventually Paul left and Vincent once again, became very depressed; so
depressed, in fact, that he cut off his lower left ear. In 1890, he shot himself in the stomach in a
field, and without seeking medical attention, went back to his house for a few days before he
died of his wounds.  In future years his paintings would be discovered for the masterpieces
they were and would be praised for the effect of light and movement that was used in them,
his contribution to the art world.
This particular painting, ‘the night cafe’ features a bar at night, with a pool table in the center of
the room and tables with people sitting around it. The coloration is mostly dark dull colors and
the complementary color scheme red and green in the walls and ceiling. Like most of Vincent
van Gogh's paintings, the texture of the picture is thick and rough, with some parts much higher
than other because of the layers and layers of paint that have been added to the canvas. A few
unique details that are included in the painting is the clock and the open window, which tells us
the time the painting was made,  the flickering illusion of light and movement that vincent's other
piece ‘starry night’ is so famous for in the lights that hang from the ceiling and the groves in the
floorboards and the way it moves that draws your attention to a small room in the back.
